Summary

This book is a mystery. The two main characters – Cymbeline (the Boy Underwater) and Veronique (his friend) – are endeavouring to find out why Cymbeline’s mother reacts the way she does to Cymbeline swimming and what she was doing with his teddy bear. At each corner, the book takes another turn, making it so you never know what will happen next.

What did I find

The main characters are rather believable and are described well, their emotions are shown through their actions towards one another and how they react to one another.

I like how it’s formal when he’s describing but informal when they’re talking so it’s a mix of both.

It writes from a third-person perspective but also puts in a bit of opinion in each chapter.

It makes sure the emotions of the characters are clear and not making you wonder which emotion they’re sensing and they all have a straight forward target the want to achieve.

My favourite scene was when he tried to take a peek at his ill mum and sees her staring at his teddy bear which he thought was lost and repeating the same two words “two sugars, two sugars…” it was a bit creepy the way the author described her unusually untidy hair, leaning forward and letting the tv drone on and on but the description was thought out well.

Another one of my favourite scenes was when Cymbeline creeped out of his Aunt’s house and sneaked along the streets to find any more clues at his own house. This scene describes him from another side, not just a shy boy but brave and daring.

Would I recommend it?

Yes, the book does well moves the characters around a lot whether they’re racing to the hospital or moving through the night to find out more. The author uses all five senses when writing so building an image of the scene well. It keeps you thinking about what will happen next.
